News came out in the past couple hours that Packers OT Yosh Nijman has officially signed his restricted free agent tender and will make $4.3 mil for the Packers in 2023.
Nijman came to Green Bay in 2019 as an undrafted free agent and over the past couple years has become a very solid blocker for Green Bay.
Last year he played in 756 offensive snaps and only allowed 5 sacks and 28 pressures. He played 200 snaps at LT and 555 snaps at RT.
With Nijman officially back in Green Bay for 2023 let's take a look at the Packers current tackle situation.
David Bakhtiari- seems to have gotten through most issues with knee. Hopefully he can stay healthy but I am worried his knee could be an issue in the future.
Yosh Nijman- stud, baller, $4.3 million dollars richer (congrats)
Zach Tom- insanely productive year considering he was a 4th round rookie. He can play all positions. Only allowed 1 sack in 489 offensive snaps.
Elgton Jenkins- took some time to shake off the rust from ACL inury. Best at guard but can play tackle if needed. Signed a 4 year $68 million contract extension in December 2022.
Right now tackle isn’t a massive need. We have 4 guys that can hold up well at tackle. If Bakhtiari goes down at any point in 2023 Nijman, Tom, or Jenkins could fill in.
With David Bakhatiri getting up there in age I do wonder if the Packers are planning on preparing for his departure at some point in the future. Personally I’d rather them not take a tackle in the first round. The Packers have been good at developing offensive lineman. Yosh Nijman was undrafted and Zach Tom was a 4th rounder. Brian Gutekunst likes to draft multiple offensive lineman every draft and there is always a guy who comes in and plays much better than you’d expect.
I’d rather the Packers target edge, wr, or te with their first pick and take multiple swings at offensive lineman later in the draft.
I like the move to bring back Nijman because it gives the Packers the flexibility in 2023 to not have to reach for a tackle.
Hey Luke, do you think we will win 10 games this coming season?
Tackle is not as big a need as before the signing. Gutekunst knows what he is doing. Love is only trade bait based his preseason performance nest year. Danny Etling will be the QB, I have Roku and seen the videos showing Etling is more accurate and better athlete.
