The Packers started the first day of mandatory minicamp that will take place from Tuesday, June 13 - Thursday, June 15th. There are small things we can learn from these practices, but it’s important to remember that it’s still only June.
What we see take place in minicamp likely won’t determine the Packers 2023 success or failure. It’s a time for the young players to learn the playbook and start to grasp what it’s going to take to fulfill their specific assignments.
My biggest question each time the Packers have an open practice to the media is, how is Jordan Love progressing? As a Packers fan I get excited when a notification pops up on my twitter that Love threw a dime to Romeo Doubs or completed a deep pass to Christian Watson.
All I really want in 2023 is for Jordan Love to come in and show that he’s going to be a problem for opposing defenses in the future.
I wish we could see his stat line for a day in practice and have a good idea about what that could indicate about his play when the season comes around, but the truth is that we can’t really take what he did today and translate it to his outcome for the season. Live games are much different than mini camp.
Now onto how Jordan Love looked today at practice.
Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated shared these details from today’s practice:
“With practice conducted inside the Don Hutson Center due to the daylong rain, the only “live” sessions were a pair of 7-on-7 periods.
In the first, Jordan Love went 1-of-6 in the red zone. Love wasn’t great but the coverage was tremendous.”
“Next was a third-down period. Love was 5-of-6 for at least four first downs. He should have been 6-of-6 for at least five first downs but AJ Dillon dropped a pass in the flat on the final play.
Added together, Love was 6-of-12 (one drop).”
“During the third-down period, Christian Watson blew past Jaire Alexander up the left sideline and Love ripped an absolute dart to Watson for what would have been a 90-some-yard touchdown.”
So Love finished the day 6-12. I’d call that a sub par day. A 50% completion percentage come the regular season is not going to cut it. But he’s also making some nice plays. I read that he threw a nice pass to Romeo Doubs during practice.
So far throughout the off-season practices it looks like there’s a mix of good and bad from Love. That’s something you’d expect from a player entering his first year as a starter.
Other takeaways via Packers reporter Bill Huber:
Anders Carslon made 5 of 6 field goals in the 41-54 yard range
With Mason Crosby no longer on the roster it all comes down to 6th round pick Carlson, brother of Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson. The Packers sound confident in Carslon taking over the kicking duties. It could be a bumpy ride considering it’ll be his first year in the NFL. Let’s hope he acclimates quickly.
CB’s Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas show up to mandatory minicamp after missing a majority of voluntary OTA’s
Alexander and Douglas made the decision to skip most of the voluntary workouts. I assume they worked out privately away from the team. It’s good to see them back.
Players that sat out because of injuries: Rashan Gary, Eric Stokes, Dallin Leavitt, Jake Hanson, Tyler Davis, Grant Dubose, Chris Slayton
Gary’s injury is the most important to monitor the rest of the off-season. He’s the most important player on the Packers defense along with Jaire Alexander. He’s still recovering from his torn ACL suffered mid season in 2022.
The #1 Offensive line: LT David Bakhtiari, LG Elgton Jenkins, C Josh Myers, RG Jon Runyan, RT Zach Tom
The only position that’s been fluctuating throughout OTA’s has been right guard. Zach Tom and Yosh Nijman have been taking turns. The rest of the starting line has been pretty consistent throughout practices.
Starting secondary: Jaire Alexander & Rasul Douglas outside CB, Keisean Nixon slot CB, Darnell Savage and Rudy Ford at safety
With Adrian Amos now signed to the New York Jets the chances of him coming back to Green Bay are officially squashed. Ford has consistently started alongside Savage at safety throughout camp.
Eric Stokes is still not back to full health after suffering a serious ankle injury last season. Until he’s back this is what the starting CB group should look like.
I’m going to be doing a Packers Q&A soon. If you’d like to ask a question feel free to leave a comments on this post, send me an email, or message me on twitter @luke_beller.
That’s all for today!
They are trying to get him good enough for the preseason to earn a No. 1 draft pick after the preseason, but he is not cooperating to this point, Andy Herman said he had a nice pass to Charles Watson who was wide open. We will see what he has. Herman also mentioned he doubts many defensive back can handle Watson. I agree completely and it will be fun to watch.
Question: will Jordan Love be a hall of famer in the future? and will we get a packers game-by-game prediction vid from you in august?
