The Packers Were In Talks About Trading For WR Laviska Shenault
Interesting. What could this mean?
Yesterday the Jaguars traded wide receiver Laviska Shenault to the Panthers for a 6th and 7th round pick.
You may be asking, Luke, why do we care about this? This doesn’t have anything to do with the Packers. But it actually does. Here’s how.
There was a report that came out this morning that the Packers were one of the teams in discussions with the Jaguars. Check this out.
“Note I found interesting last night: Carolina had some competition for Laviska Shenault. Packers, Falcons were among the other teams that were talking to the Jaguars about trading for Shenault before they reached a deal with the Panthers, per sources.” (Dan Graziano)
Does this mean that the Packers are unhappy with their receiver unit as a whole? Not necessarily.
Brian Gutekunst recently stated that the Packers try to be in almost every conversation with players around the league. It makes sense. Every player is probably somewhat enticing for the right price.
All of us Packer’s fans know not to get our hopes up when it comes to the Packers being one of the teams interested in a player. We’ve seen it happen time and time again. The most notable example was last year when Odell was about to be on the move and it came out that the Packers and the Rams were the final two teams in the Odell sweepstakes. Aaaand he signed with the Rams…
The Packers front office seems to be in more conversations than most other teams in the NFL. This is coming from a Packer’s fan perspective so maybe it happens a lot with other teams as well. All I know is that it happens with the Packers quite often!
Even if the Packers were interested in Laviska Shenault they did not value him enough to give up a 6th and 7th round draft pick. The Panthers thought he was worth that. He’s totaled 1,219 yards and 5 touchdowns in two years. All 5 touchdowns came in his first year. He’s been a somewhat productive player.
Now this begs the question, are the Packers in the market for wide receivers? Do they think they need to add to the room? Will they make a move in the future?
These are all questions that all we can do is speculate. Unless you are in the Packers front office we don’t know what they are really thinking. The Packers have now had the entire preseason and training camp to evaluate the receivers. It could be that around the NFL there are some talented wide receivers that the Packers think could upgrade their unit. At the same time they could be extremely happy with what we have currently. Who knows. Brian Gutekunst is always on the hunt for those hidden gems.
