One question I’ve been getting from multiple people on youtube recently is whether or not the Packers should make a trade for DeAndre Hopkins.
Here is my answer: If Aaron Rodgers is QB for the Packers in 2023 go for it. If Jordan Love is QB in 2023 don’t make the trade.
Last year in 9 games (missed 6 with PED suspension) Deandre Hopkins still put up solid numbers. 64 receptions, 717 yards, and 3 touchdowns. He can still play at an elite level.
The one thing that does make this a hard decision is because of his cap hit. According to NBC Sports if he is traded he will have a 19.5 million dollar cap hit in 2023 and a 14.915 million dollar cap hit in 2024. That is massive.
If Rodgers returns for at least one more season this is the kind of move that could take us over the top. The Packers could use one more elite WR to pair with Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs. The move doesn’t come without risk. Hopkins will be 31 years old when the 2023 season begins and there is no telling when his age will get to him. But at the end of the day with no risk there is no reward.
If Jordan Love is QB the Packers can be a little more patient. They could find a much cheaper wide receiver who won’t be at Hopkins level but it would allow the Packers to be a little more flexible when it comes to the salary cap.
If I’m honest I think the chances of this trade happening are very close to zero. Brian Gutekunst has not been willing to trade for big name wide receivers over the past few years and I don’t see why he would suddenly change now.
I don't think we need him either way. I don't want Packers to trade Aaron Rodgers either!! Thanks for your newsletter, good reads!
Nah, too many better options….just never really liked him enough to want him on Packers.
