We live in a time where it is getting more and more difficult to decipher exactly what is true and not true in this NFL media landscape. It seems that almost every day there are new rumors that come up out of nowhere. Sometimes legit NFL reporters state things that then are proved false later on. Sometimes things that seemed crazy at the time end up being the truth.
This is why nowadays I feel like treating most things like a rumor until something actually happens. When new rumors do arise I like to do my research and decide whether or not the rumor makes sense.
Today we have a new rumor to dive into.
Supposedly the Titans have reached out to the Packers about trading for Rodgers.
This rumor was reported by NFL analysis network. When I was first reading through this yesterday I thought it said NFL Network, so I initially believed the rumor.
Then on second glance I realized it is not NFL network, but NFL analysis network. Apparently an unmanned source shared this with NFL analysis Network. Now this could be true. Maybe they did speak with a NFL executive as they said they did. At the same time people can make things up.
In today’s internet age someone could say they talked with an NFL executive and within 24 hours that rumor would catch steam even if it had no basis in truth.Again it could be true, but we really don’t know. I’d wait to here from a more reliable source before I fully trust that this rumor is true.
Here’s exactly what the article said:
“You can now add another team to that list. According to a former NFL executive that spoke to NFL Analysis Network, the Tennessee Titans have reached out to the Packers about Aaron Rodgers. While the executive does caution that a deal with the Jets is most likely, the Titans are a team to watch should those talks actually fall through.
“While the likely outcome for (Aaron) Rodgers is still the Jets, the Titans have reached out recently. If things fall apart with New York, Tennessee would have a shot at acquiring him.””
The Titans current QB is Ryan Tannehill. Their receiver room is greatly lacking. Last year they traded away AJ Brown which was a devastating blow to their offense and a huge addition for the Philadelphia Eagles.
It doesn’t make sense to me for the Titans to take on Rodgers massive contract because their team seems far away from being a legitimate contender.
They’d need to make some moves on offense to really be competitive even if they got Aaron Rodgers. Last year they were the 28th ranked scoring offense in the NFL. Rodgers would take their team up a level but I don’t think it would be enough. I don’t think they’d be a dangerous playoff team and it makes much more sense for the Titans to go after a young QB.
Earlier this morning I even saw rumors that the Titans may be trying to move up into the top 6 in this year's draft. If I was Tennessee I’d see if I could land a young prospect at QB instead of throwing all of your money into Aaron Rodgers when he could be gone after one year.
Now as a Packers’ fan I hope these rumors are true.
As I’ve shared on this newsletter before, the more teams willing to trade for Rodgers the better.
The Jets have acted for the past month that Rodgers to the Jets is a done deal. Either they know something the rest of the public doesn’t know yet, or they are posturing and believe Packers GM Brian Gutekunst will eventually throw his hands up in defeat and say “Okay fine, you can have him for less than he’s worth”.
I don’t think Brian Gutekunst is going to do that. If the Jets don’t offer the Packers what the front office thinks he’s worth they should hold on till the Jets become more desperate. They will. The Jets fan base will try to overthrow the front office if this trade doesn’t end up happening. Brian Gutekunst knows this.
He is a smart guy. He has all the leverage. The Jets will cave.
But if the Titans were actually willing to trade for Rodgers that only helps the Packers. It’s simple supply and demand. Competition pushes up the price. I hope every QB needy team is calling up Brian Gutekunst.
Let’s get a bidding war going. In fact as I was writing this an NFL exec hit me up and told me that the Panthers are willing to trade their #1 overall pick for Aaron Rodgers , the Jets better pony up before it’s too late! (haha totally kidding).
Anyways, this has been a wild time to cover the Packers and I hope the Packers don’t settle for less than they should get for Aaron Rodgers. The Jets made a mistake when they declared that Aaron Rodgers will 100% be their QB in 2023. If they miss out on Rodgers Jets fans will never forget it and if Robert Saleh doesn’t find success he will not be in New York for long.
Actually quite some time ago before they made the trade with the Bears there was a report on the Packers site on my Android that Carolina had asked about Rodgers availability. This was right around the time he was going on the darkness retreat. As far as roster the Niners make the most sense but I read they only had about 3 million in cap space. I think there are more NFL insiders and experts than bushels of apples in the country.
