So it looks like the Jets have decided that it’s taking way too much Draft capital to get Aaron Rodgers so they have settled for another former Packers QB who may be able to get the job done. Tim Boyle.
He may not be Aaron Rodgers but he was his backup. There is that saying that you become the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. The Jets may be hoping Boyle has picked up some of Rodgers talent.
Now all jokes aside this seems like a plan that prepares for the chance of the Aaron Rodgers trade not getting done sometime soon. Not only was Tim Boyle Aaron Rodgers backup in both 2019 and 2020, but he also was on the Packers the same time that Nathaniel Hackett was the offensive coordinator. If the Packers and Jets aren’t able to come to an agreement on trade compensation sometime soon they have someone who can run practice at QB who knows exactly how Aaron Rodgers likes to operate, and who is already familiar with Nathaniel Hackett.
Boyle can teach the Jets receivers what Aaron Rodgers likes and doesn’t like. That way if the trade takes longer the Jets can make some kind of progress without Rodgers.
The Jets are very confident that Rodgers is going to one day end up a Jet. If I were Brian Gutekunst I would stick to my guns and not cave to whatever the Jets demands are. As I’ve said before, I still think the Jets need Aaron Rodgers more badly than the Packers need to trade him. That’s not to say the Packers don’t really want to trade Rodgers, but the Packers can prepare for 2023 just fine with Jordan Love on the roster. If I’m Brian Gutekunst I’m waiting till the Jets give me what I want.
It would be funny if the Jets banked on Rodgers getting to New York to then have a team like the 49ers come in and swoop him up. I discussed those 49ers rumors a few days ago and honestly who knows if they are true or not. As a Packers fan I hope they are true because it could cause the Jets to be more willing to give draft capital if another team is trying to woo Aaron Rodgers.
I think the Jets are really trying to entice Rodgers to come to the Jets. Now he had a new wish list of guys he wants to come with him. We will see how serious the Jets are in the coming days.
It behooves the Packers to wait until after the draft to do any deal. Preferably after June 1 for cap savings this year, but perhaps other suitors will come out of the woodwork at that time. The longer this goes on, the more desperate the Jets become.
