One thing that you are constantly reminded of in the sports world is that things can change in a hurry. Just yesterday the Dallas Mavericks made a blockbuster trade for Kyrie Irving and just like that momentum has shifted in the NBA.
Teams are always changing, adapting, and morphing into different versions of themselves.
We are nearing that time of the NFL calendar where massive shifts occur. Big time players become free agents. NFL GM’s decide it’s time to shake up their roster. One team decides to make a move for a big star while another chooses to load up on draft capital.
Packers GM Brian Gutekunst has a big decision to make this off-season when it comes to the future of the franchise.
Will he be willing to do what Aaron Rodgers wants to ensure Rodgers sticks around in 2023? Or will both come together and decide it’s best to part ways? These are all questions that will likely be answered in the next couple months.
Aaron Rodgers has spent 18 years in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Almost two decades playing for the same organization. And now this off-season could mark the end of his time with the Packers. We don’t know what the future holds.
With all of this uncertainty the possibility of Rodgers getting traded elsewhere has Davante Adams out in salesman mode trying to make his best pitch to Aaron Rodgers.
Just a year after making his decision to move on from Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers Davante is ready for Aaron Rodgers to be his QB again.
Looking back there were a multitude of reasons that Davante mentioned for choosing the Raiders over the Packers. He wanted to reunite with his college QB and friend in Derek Carr. He wanted to be closer to his family. He also mentioned the uncertainty of how long Aaron Rogders would be playing. Davante didn’t want to sign a long term contract with the Packers for Aaron Rodgers to end up leaving one year later. What’s unfortunate for Davante is that’s exactly what has happened with Derek Carr.
The Raiders and Carr will be parting ways just one year after Davante signed a 5 year $140 million contract with the Raiders. So it makes sense that with the new circumstances Davante Adams finds himself in, he is doing what he can to make the most out of the situation. Right now the Raiders QB is Jarrett Stidham. I’ve got nothing against the guy but in 3 years in the league he’s thrown more interceptions than touchdowns.
The Raiders are in QB Limbo. Davante wants a QB who can get it done at the highest level.
The Raiders have the #7 pick in the draft so there is a chance they decide to draft a young QB. They could go the veteran route and sign someone like Jimmy Garoppolo who will be a free agent this off-season. Or they could swing big and trade for a guy like Aaron Rodgers.
A few things would have to happen for this to even have a chance to see the light of day. Aaron Rodgers first off has to decide if he still wants to play football.
Right now he is still in the process of contemplating his future and deciding whether or not he is ready to retire from the NFL. Personally I think there is a less than 1% chance that Aaron decides to retire. I strongly believe he’ll be back in 2023 as he still believes he can play at the highest level.
If he decides to return there is a chance the Packers and Rodgers decide to run it back in Green Bay in 2023. Right now I feel like there is a 50/50 chance of Rodgers returning to Green Bay or being traded.
For the past couple seasons there has been speculation of Rodgers being traded but a trade never occurred.
Things feel a little different to me this year. I think that Packers GM Brian Gutekunst wants Jordan Love to be the starter at some point and with the Packers going 8-9 this past season it could be the perfect time to move on to Jordan Love while getting draft capital in return for Aaron Rodgers.
The Raiders could be an enticing option for both Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. Aaron would get to reunite with Davante Adams and join a team surrounded by lots of offensive talent. Davante Adams. Darren Waller. Hunter Renfrow. Josh Jacobs.
Last year the Raiders had the 12th best scoring offense in the NFL and the combo of weapons I just mentioned only played a combined 76 snaps together. Throw in a healthy Aaron Rodgers and you would have one of the best offenses in the NFL.
Now from a trade perspective.
The Raiders have the 7th overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. Aaron Rodgers is worth a 1st round pick at the very minimum. He could easily go for a 1st and 2nd rounderand maybe more. If the Raiders knew he would play for 2 or 3 years I could see them willing to trade two firsts.
The thing is every off-season going forward there is a chance that Aaron Rodgers decides to retire. So if you are the Raiders you have to make the trade knowing there is a possibility you only get Aaron Rodgers for 1 year. If the Packers made a trade with the Raiders and were able to get back the #7 pick of the 2023 draft and a 2nd or 3rd rounder, the Packers would have the assets to build a very strong foundation around Jordan Love.
Among the teams that are in need of a QB the Raiders may make the most sense. The Jets are another team that could be a viable option for both sides.
If Rodgers does become available there could be a bidding war which would bode well for the Packers. If I was the Raiders or Jets I’d go all out for Aaron Rodgers. As a Packers fan I’d be sad to see him go but it could set us up nicely for a future after Aaron Rodgers.
Random Thoughts
Ok so I want to take a quick second to talk about Kyrie Irving being traded to the Dallas Mavericks. This is a Packers newsletter but occasionally there are random things I want to talk about. For those of you who don’t know I actually live in Dallas. And now if you are wondering why I am a Packers fan it’s because my mom grew up in Wisconsin and raised me as a Packers fan from birth.
I’m not someone who follows the NBA very closely but usually around playoff time I’ll start to get a lot more interested in what’s going on. But this Kyrie trade suddenly has me much more interested in the Dallas Mavericks. Luka is a beast but now to have a player of Kyrie’s talent playing alongside Luka makes the Mavs much more intriguing.
Luke no longer has to carry the load all by himself. The Mavs may actually have a chance at winning it all and from what I’ve been reading they may make another trade before the NBA trade deadline on thursday.
Anyways if you read this far I appreciate it! I bet you didn’t expect to read about the Mavs from me this Monday morning. Hope you have a great week!
Wait, I'm confused. Why would Davante be recruiting Aaron Rodgers when he already has a HOF QB with him (grin)?
