Brian Gutekunst Gives Update On Jordan Love Contract Talks
"Both parties want the same thing."
Earlier this morning Brian Gutekunst gave an update on the progress of extension talks between the Packers and Jordan Love on 97.3 the game.
“We’re in those conversations right now and I think the nice part about this is that none of these things are always easy or fast, but both parties want the same thing. We’d like to get this thing done before training camp for sure… Both parties want to get a contract extension done. I think that that stability at that position really allows you to have some security with the way we build our team. We’re looking forward to getting that done, but it never goes fast.”
It’s now been a little over two months since Gutekunst shared on March 25th that the Packers and Jordan Love had begun preliminary contract talks. May 3rd was the earliest a new deal could be done because of the extension Love signed last season. One year must pass before an NFL player can sign another extension.
These talks have been going on for a while at this point. We know the Packers and Love both want to get a deal done, the question is how much the Packers want to pay Love and how much Love believes he deserves.
Here are the top 10 QB contracts as it stands today June 4,2024. (per overthecap)
Jordan Love will not be making less than Jared Goff unless he pulls a Tom Brady and decides to take a discount to help out the team. While that would be awesome, my guess is that doesn’t happen. He’s better than Jared Goff and deserves at a minimum $53 million per year. I’d even say there’s a good chance he makes more than Joe Burrow. He could very well reset the QB market.
Best case scenario is a deal that gets done before training camp. Of course Brian Gutekunst wants to get this deal done as soon as possible because the longer it takes for this deal to get signed, the more the Packers will likely have to pay Jordan Love when it’s all said and done. There are multiple quarterbacks that may sign new deals before the season. Guys like Trevor Lawrence, Tua, Dak Prescott.
I think it would be unwise to pay Lawrence and Tua over $53 million per year. Their careers are going to pale in comparison to Jordan Love when it’s all said and done.
When Dak gets paid, whether with the Cowboys this year or somewhere else in free agency next year, he’s likely going to make more than Jared Goff. I wouldn’t pay him considering his lack of success in the playoffs, but star QB’s who dominate in the regular season are hard to find. If the Cowboys were to pony up and pay Dak this month, the contract Love receives will likely go up in value.
My guess is right now Jordan Love is just sitting back and waiting. He’s been taking part in OTA’s and has been there for the team even though he has yet to get a new deal. Would Love be willing to skip training camp until his contract needs are met by the Packers? I honestly don’t think so.
You can tell he wants to be out there with the guys. He’s a leader. Odds are that none of his teammates would fault him for doing his best to get the money he deserves, but I honestly don’t see it coming to that.
Best case scenario is that this deal is done before training camp. But… if the money isn’t right for Love, it could carry on longer. Time will tell.
